Newberry Junior Olympic Archery Club Wins Big at Regionals

On February 24th and 25th, the Newberry Junior Olympic Archery Development Club traveled to Conyers, Georgia to compete in the 43rd Annual Junior Olympic Archery Development’s National Indoor Championships, sponsored by USA Archery and World Archery. The regional portion of the competition brought archers from the southeastern states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. The team coached by Eric Blalock, brought home a total of fourteen medals. Archers competed in ten different divisions based on age and bow type (Olympic Recurve or Compound). For many archers, this was their first experience traveling to compete.

Gold medal winners were Olivia Huffer, Ryan Oliver, Rebel Gryffin, Bailey Gregory and Gan Gryffin. Silver Medalists: Wesley Francis, Tristan Hyde, Aubrey Webster, Allen Abe, Amye Francis and Dustin Clark. Bronze Medalists: Austin Bagby, Wyatt Pogue and Julia Francis.

Archers began fundraising for the trip in December. Their major sponsor was Easton Foundations. Additional support was provided by Florida Fish and Wildlife, Hitchcock’s Market of Newberry, Villagio’s Pizzeria, A Stitch in Time Embroidery, Native Kids and the citizens of Newberry who provided individual donations.

The team trains at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex under the direction of Head Coach Robert Turner, and Assistant Coaches: Eric Blalock, David Anthony and Joey Todd. The Newberry JOAD Club is a volunteer, non-profit organization with the mission of promoting a love of archery, while encouraging sportsmanship, volunteerism and community service. In June, the team will travel to Hamilton, Ohio for Outdoor Nationals.
